1. General

• Groups are groups of users who can see each others list.  This prevents strangers from seeing the items on your list and you from seeing a bunch of strangers' gifts.

1.3 - Can I add my own Groups and people?

• No.  Groups and people are added by the administrator.  However, in the near future Groups will be eliminated and you will be able to choose who can see you.

1.4 - What is the icon next to the item description?

• That icon () appears next to items that have a web page linked.  Clicking that icon instead of the description will open a new browser window so that you don't leave the gift list page.

1.5 - Why do some items have colored backgrounds?

• Those indicate items which will give the AceMcKilty website a commission.  Blue is for Amazon.com, green is for EntertainmentEarth.com, and yellow is for Art.com.

1.6 - Why do some dates under "Last Item Added", "Last Item Modified", and "Last Item Removed" have bold text and/or appear red?

• The dates appear red when there has been activity for that person in the last two days.  The dates appear bold when there has been activity in the last four days.

• Because those people know how to program in HTML and have written code to display a picture.  If you know HTML, you can do the same.  If you would like to try to do this, here's what you do... in a nutshell. 

1. In the comments section, type this: <img src="">
2. Go to the web page that has the picture that you want to display.
3. Right-click and choose properties.
4. Copy the value for "Address".  You can place the cursor on the value and press CTRL+A and then CTRL+C.  This will select everything and then copy.
5. Paste the value in between the two quotes in <img src="">.  You can place the cursor between the two quotes and press CTRL+V.  This will paste the value.

• Yes, but only if the know your password.  They could also log on as you if they type in your name and your password has been memorized.

2 - Buying Gifts

2.1 - How do I mark a gift as "bought"?

• Once you've decided to buy a gift for someone, click the button labeled "I bought this!" located in the Action column of the gift list.  Be sure you click the button that's in the same row as the gift you bought.

2.2 - How do I put a gift I marked as "bought" back on the list?

• At the top of the main page, there is a box labeled "My Functions."  Click the button labeled "View Gifts I Bought."  This will open a new window which will show you all the gifts you have bought for everyone.  Find the gift you bought and in the Action column, find the button labeled "Put it back..."  Click the button located in the same row as the gift you want to put back and a new window will open asking you to confirm.  Click the button labeled "Put it Back" and the item will be back on the list once the page is refreshed.  You will be returned to your list of gifts you bought.  You can close this window.  If you want to confirm that the item is off the list, refresh the gift page (F5 in Internet Explorer.)

2.3 - Is anyone notified when I buy a gift?

• No, but the gift will be marked as Purchased in the list..

2.4 - Is it possible for two people to mark a gift as bought?

• Yes, but it's unlikely.  The two people would have to be on the website at the same time and mark the gift as bought.  There will be a fix for this in the future.

2.5 - What happens if I buy a gift and before I give the gift, the recipient removes it from the list?

• You won't know about it and they're going to get the gift anyway.  You get to yell at them.

2.6 - How can I see what gifts I bought?

• At the top of the main page, there is a box labeled "My Functions."  Click the button labeled "View Gifts I Bought."  This will open a new window which will show you all the gifts you have bought for everyone.

2.7 - How can I clear my list of items I bought?

• At the top of the main page, there is a box labeled "My Functions."  Click the button labeled "View Gifts I Bought."  This will open a new window which will show you all the gifts you have bought for everyone.  For each gift you want to remove from your list, click the button labeled "PURGE" in the Action column.  Be sure to click the button in the same row as the item you want to remove.  A new window will open and ask you to confirm.  Click the button labeled "PURGE" and the item will be purged.  The item will no longer appear on your list.

2.8 - I've purged and item by mistake, how can I put it back?

• You can't.  Contact admin@acemckilty.com to ask to have it put back if you want to be a pain in the ass.

2.9 - When will the item I bought be marked Purchased?

• Immediately, but it will still appear on your list until you refresh (F5 in Internet Explorer.)

3 - Receiving Gifts

3.1 - How do I add a gift to my list that I want?

• At the top of the main page, there is a box labeled "My Functions."  Click the button labeled "Add a New Gift."  Fill out the information and click the button labeled "Add Item".  The item will appear in your list after you refresh the gift page (F5 in Internet Explorer.)

3.2 - What is "Viewable to All" / "Viewable to Selected People"?

• When adding a new gift, you can specify who will be able to see the gift.  Clicking "Viewable to All" will allow everyone who can see your gifts to see this one too.  Clicking "Viewable to Selected People" will allow you to specify who will see this gift.  You must then check off which people you want to see that gift.  If you don't check anyone's name, then only you will be able to see this gift.

3.3 - When will the gift be added to my list?

• Immediately, but it will won't appear on your list until you refresh (F5 in Internet Explorer.)

3.4 - How do I remove a gift from my list?

• Once you've received a gift from someone or you've decided you no longer want an item, click the button labeled "Remove..." located in the Action column of the gift list.  Be sure you click the button that's in the same row as the gift you bought.  A new window will open and ask you to confirm that you no longer want this item on your list.  Click the button labeled "Remove" and the window will close.  After you refresh (F5 on internet explorer), you will no longer see the item.

3.5 - When will the item I removed actually be removed from the list?

• Immediately, but you will not see a change until you refresh (F5 on internet explorer.)

3.6 - What happens if I remove a gift that someone has already bought?

• Unless you tell everyone you bought it, you will probably receive that gift.  Maybe you shouldn't buy gifts for yourself so close to Christmas or your birthday or whatever this occasion is...

3.7 - How can I see which gifts I removed?

• At the top of the main page, there is a box labeled "My Functions."  Click the button labeled "View Gifts I Removed."  This will open a new window which will show you all the gifts you have removed.

3.8 - How can I clear my list of items removed?

• At the top of the main page, there is a box labeled "My Functions."  Click the button labeled "View Gifts I Removed."  This will open a new window which will show you all the gifts you have removed.  For each gift you want to remove from your list, click the button labeled "PURGE" in the Action column.  Be sure to click the button in the same row as the item you want to remove.  A new window will open and ask you to confirm.  Click the button labeled "PURGE" and the item will be purged.  The item will no longer appear on your list.

3.9 - I've purged an item by mistake, how can I put it back?

3.10 - Someone got me a gift and removed it from my list but I want more than one of that item-- How can I indicate that?

• The best way would be to indicate it in the item comments or description.

4 - Profile

4.1 - What is my profile?

• Your profile is where you get to tell a little about yourself by answering a bunch of questions.  This will help your friends and family buy you a gift that's not on your list by knowing you a little better.

4.2 - How can I view my profile?

• At the top of the main page, there is a box labeled "My Functions."  Click the button labeled "View My Profile."

4.3 - How can I edit my profile?

• At the top of the main page, there is a box labeled "My Functions."  Click the button labeled "Edit My Profile."  Fill out the information and be sure to click the button labeled "Update" located at the bottom of the page.

4.4 - How can I see someone else's profile?

• To the right of each person's name, there is the word "Profile."  Click this to open a new window displaying that person's profile.

4.5 - How can I change my picture?

• E-mail a new picture to admin@acemckilty.com

4.6 - How can I add pictures to my answers?

• Learn HTML and write the code in the comments box.  If you would like to try to do this, here's what you do... in a nutshell.

   

  1. In the answer box, type this: <img src="">
  2. Go to the web page that has the picture that you want to display.
  3. Right-click and choose properties.
  4. Copy the value for "Address".  You can place the cursor on the value and press CTRL+A and then CTRL+C.  This will select everything and then copy.
  5. Paste the value in between the two quotes in <img src="">.  You can place the cursor between the two quotes and press CTRL+V.  This will paste the value.

• As soon as you know what you want to get for someone, click "I Bought This!" even before you've bought the item. Even if you think you might get them the gift you should remove it. This will remove it from the list before anyone else can buy it and eliminate duplicate gifts. Just be sure to put it back if you decide not to get it.
• Don't buy a gift from the list too far in advance. The recipient may have decided to get that gift for themselves.

• You should add as many gifts as you can. That way when some gives you a gift, it can still be a surprise.
• Add expensive gifts you know no one can afford. Add everything you want: A) It's a wish list, maybe you'll get it for yourself B) It will give people ideas on what they can get you that's not on your list. C) Maybe someone will win the lottery...
• If you decide you buy yourself a gift from your own list, be sure it's not too close to your birthday, Christmas, or any other occasion you might receive a gift. Someone could have already gotten it for you and not given it yet.
• If you don't mind receiving more than one gift certificate from the same place, put a note in the comments asking the buyers not to remove this.

• Fill these out and update them from time to time. These can help people get you a gift that's not on your list.
